Evolution of Work

June 1, 2010

I am sitting in my office and through the large glass windows I can see the awesome weather that adores the city of Hyderabad, It’s cloudy with slight drizzle and cool breeze blowing the heat out. And I have this requirement of sitting in office, randomly browsing through websites, with good acting skills so that I give the impression that I am working and complete sufficient hours in office, so that my project manager is satisfied that I am making apt contribution to the project. But inability to go out and have a drive in the stupendous weather has made me wonder about the origin of this concept called as ‘Work’.

As far as I know, When ‘Man’ was evolving (that’s how it was written in our course books, I wonder whether woman evolved as well or not ;-)) Anyways, man used to hunt for food and feed his family, wore the skin of the dead animals as clothes and lived in pre constructed caves, such simple life. He must have had ample time in his life for his family, friends and kids. He would indulge in leisurely activities like admiring flora and fauna, recreational sports, afternoon siestas and romantic evenings with his wives (plural usage is not by mistake ;-)) there were no marketing calls from people with constrained language skills, tempting people to go for home loans, car loans, insurance or credit cards. The whole world was the home rather than the super expensive 1 bedroom apartments. Man with the biggest club was the leader and was always right; justice was instant. Monogamy was a serious sign of weakness 😉 and everybody was non vegetarian. In the midst of this heaven kind of life, some dumbass creature must have come up with the idea that Life can be better if houses are built, roads are laid, farming is done, Industrialize the world etc.

Now today’s world may idolize this idiot as the genius or visionary. I visualize him as the person, who led to making the world complex and confusing. The Cave Man was so much content in his life; he only used to look after himself. But with the advent of rapid progress started by some douche bags, there was this imminent requirement of some people to support development, and hence was born the concept called ‘Work’. Also a concept of hierarchy was introduced in the society- namely the Manager Class and the Worker Class (how we have been tormented by this hierarchy, I don’t need to paint the picture). Manager class was the class that came up with ideas (howsoever unrealistic and impractical they are) and the worker class implemented the ideas. Now since these ideas were so unassailable, the worker class was always reeling under pressure. They were exploited and the idyllic life that they were enjoying was snatched from them. As the Development gained pace, more and more people were dragged into the ‘Worker Class’ and the final nail in the coffin was the introduction of another concept called ‘Money’, but more on this concept some other time. So this is how ‘Work’ was invented which ultimately led to the collapse of the idea called ‘Life’.

Now in today’s world, things have got so worse that ‘Work’ has been accepted and even touted as a social necessity, which decides the survival path of humans. Man’s matrimonial prospects are heavily dependent on the earnings from his work. Due to work, the concept of money was generated, and we all know money is the root of all evil. So just imagine if ‘Work’ wouldn’t had been invented, World would have been a much better place. The bliss that was abundant during Caveman’s life is now sold through expensive packages called as Exotic holidays. I so wish to be born during the Neanderthal era, I would have really enjoyed it there, Would you?

Must say best thoughts come while we are at work and our mind is active on every front but what we are paid for 😉 jokes apart. I will reinstate the fact that writing style is tres bien!

I will want to go back in the history to see how it all evolved but I am happy in the existing world. A few hundred years and generation then will say the same thing about us.

But to think of it we are still the same in many ways- people still like to wear clothes made of skin and show it off. We eat meats and that will contribute to the extinction of another 1000 species in addition we have started to hunt even human beings , men will always be boys and do the wrong ( you know what I mean 😉 )

Thank you very much Madame !! Yes i tried leather trousers, but they didnt go off very well, not to say that they were very uncomfortable. 😉 I am not saying our times are bad, we have to be content with whatever we have got. But was thinking how good it have been in those times. Thanks for the comment man and yes Men will be Men till eternity 🙂

It sounds all nice but how can you be so sure ape man that it was better off back then… yeah well men weren’t killing their own folks.

PS: ‘Men will be men till eternity’ LOL- admit it offline you meant it as a joke 😉

Male ego I tell you, no matter how many eras and evolution stages will happen. This shall remain constant…! Grow-up and don’t get all touchy about it. In no way are you inferior to us if not better. Happy!!

          • June 5, 2010 3:19 pm

Excuse me !! Who is this “us’ you are talking abt?

  4. June 3, 2010 11:31 pm

I don’t know….as they say, the grass is greener..blah blah.
I am a pure carnivore in this world, so it won’t be any different if I go back a few 1000 years. And I doubt anyone would have any time for romantic strolls and admiring flora and fauna.

Besides the point…..very impressive writing style. A well written article with subtle comic influences that as Shilpa so rightly pointed out, also makes you think how mechanical we have become.

    • June 3, 2010 11:45 pm

Dude those guys had nothing but time…And I agree that you are a carnivore, but you see i read sumwhere, each day 10000 species are becoming extinct, by that calculation, project how many species you havn’t tasted that would be available in those times 😉 Thanks for the comment dude, keep visiting.

LOL!!! That was a good read 🙂 And I would say although funny it did make me think as to how much mechanical we have all become 🙂

Hi Friend, I could see your frustration in having been subjected to the concept of ‘Work’. You have my deepest condolenses. Even I’m one of the same kind.

I think even the cave man had to do a lot of ‘work’. He had to ‘hunt’ to feed his family. Perhaps the lack of opportunities in hunting must have forced the later generation to seek other ‘work.

What can we do Man, like you said ‘Work’ has become a social necessity, more so for unmarried men (matrimonial prospects!).

I will accompany you to the Neanderthal era. Let’s go shoot crows(that’s the only available species for hunting now)and walk the world.

Nice post again. I like your stream of thoughts. Good going.

    • June 2, 2010 10:37 am

Thanks a lot Man !! Hunting is not work yaar, hunting is a sport. And yes if go to the jungles today, there will be very less fauna to hunt, but then it is also a result of progress made due to people working, that ecosystem was dismatled. So You see Work is the root of all evil. Thanks for the comment man..
