It’s a Jungle out there !!

May 12, 2010

May 12, 2010, I complete two year in this behemoth of a Company with over 1, 25,000 employees. Am I happy, proud, and content? I really don’t know, my subconscious decided to completely ignore this event. It has become kind of mechanical, you get up in the morning, go to office, sit in front of the computer, work, joke around with colleagues, have lunch, work some more and come back home. Where is the happiness that was supposed to be involved in my profession? Now it’s all about money that you get on 1st of every month. Is it worth it, I seriously don’t know!
As I was leaving my hometown to join this company, I went to my professor to take his blessings. I asked him –‘Madam any advice for me to survive in this big corporate world?’ She replied with all the accumulated wisdom over the years –‘Nobody is your friend …’ The mildness with which she said those things came across to me as a passerby’s comment and didn’t made it way in my psyche.
But here as I am sitting rewinding the last two years in my mind, I am able to recognize what gems she had bestowed upon me. Corporate world opens up your eyes to the realities of the world. As soon as I swipe into that building, I cease being a human and transform into a resource. A resource which is as good as the efficiency with which it performs and yield is the ultimate measure of its usefulness to the company. The euphemism for your competitors is ‘Colleague’, but is actually someone who would climb up the ladder crushing you on the way, if required.

The coffee I drink during my late hours in the job is actually not a display of care from the company; it is actually a Cost to Company, duly included in my yearly package. It does not matter how well you are performing, it matters how good a sycophant you are to your boss. If you are in the good books of your boss, you will rise up else it’s all donkeys’ work. It is a place where experience is not how much knowledge you have gathered; it is the number of years you are holding the designation. It is where you will be making that wonderful presentation burning the night oil and finally your boss will take all the credit. It is a place where you will see the incompetent person termed as the fast tracker, as he has really excelled in doing the personal service to boss.
It’s a place where a new recruit will always have a fatter pay check than yours; loyalty to the company isn’t something that will be rewarded. It is all dependent on your utilization numbers i.e. the green bucks you have earned for the company. And if you failed, a HR person will arrive at your desk one fine day along with security, you will be asked to accumulate your stuff  and in few minutes you will be escorted to the gate. And you will still be wondering what just happened?
The department called the ‘Human Resource’ does not know anything of the ground realities, but the policies made are pure work of art. It is a place where you lose your identity in the crowd; life is circumcised to a 4ft x 4ft place called Cubicle. Honesty as a virtue is seldom appreciated and ‘Yes Boss’ is the call of the day.

I still sometimes remember that adage – Make something you love, your job, and you will never work. I still yearn and aspire to have the guts someday to just abjure everything and start something of my own, something I love.
Till then, I have learned some of the tricks of the trade and avoided some which were too disgusting. All in all I have learned to survive in the jungle, where the law is ‘Survival of the Fittest’. If you don’t hunt, you will be hunted. Always remember ‘Nobody is your Friend’ .If you are weak hearted, Corporate World is not the place for you.

I don’t know much about the corporate world, as I’m still a student. But I hope you’ll get out of this jungle soon enough and start doing what you truly love and desire.
“Survival of the fittest” is indeed the law to be followed in the jungle out there or else you’ll be extinct. XD
All the best for your survival. 🙂

100 percent I stand by what you have told. It is always true that new recruits take home a fatter pay check than yours. Loyalty is never rewarded, and if you have been around for more than 5 years, they want you to leave. If you dont want to leave, they will make your life hell, they will torture you until you leave. Thats their bloody policy.

Nice post, man. Keep them coming.

You sound jaded. And I don’t blame you given the frustrations that abound in a workplace where people aren’t recognized for their talent, their worth, their contributions but are instead statistics. When we leave college we’re still in the ideal mindset…the corporate environment certainly provides a jolt of reality. I tried a corporate job once — lasted three weeks. I quit knowing that it would eat away at me — the moolah was there, but not the sense of satisfaction or accomplishment. I went back to the university environment where things aren’t as cut-throat. And even so, sometimes I question if I am still passionate about what I am doing. Bottomline is: if you feel you’re not learning, not growing personally or professionally, and simply doing this as a robot — because it’s too tough to start anew — you need to start introspecting and aligning your professional goals with your personal ones. Sorry for giving this unasked for advice, but I think life is too short for any of us to waste it on things that make us unhappy on a daily basis.

what a realistic portrayal of work environment in today’s life. a real eye opener. it is true that human beings have ceased to be treated as living individuals rather they have become commodities or in ur words resources.
such is the competition that fellow colleagues/friends will go to any level, stab your back even ur front just be one up on you
it is the world of survival for the fittest,
the one who can flow with the tide will survive
    a eye opener post

    Great line:

It is a place where you lose your identity in the crowd; life is circumcised to a 4ft x 4ft place called Cubicle.

    Definitely rings true.
